Occasionally, I'll log in and lo and behold, there are no new topics. But wait! After checking a few, I realize that there are new posts from topics that I read before, but they won't show as "new", they'll be marked as "read".
Kind of annoying... Has anyone else had this problem? I only noticed it after being in the forums for about a month.

Yes...
The 'new comment' thing has a rather simplistic implementation. It worked good when there were only a couple new comments per day - but with multiple new comments on threads each day, it's become insufficient.
I'll put that on my list of things to improve with the next website enhancements.

Has the pendulum swung too far in the other direction? When I read the new posts, the crystals remain lit. I have to log out and then log back in (or wait long enough for my session to idle out and then refresh) in order for the forum to update.
*glances back and forth* No...no of course I'm not constantly refreshing the page in anticipation of the next post! That would make me seem obsessive and overeager. Kinda like this guy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0t0dv6w91s

I believe the new comment indicators just show that there was a new comment to that thread sometime in the past few hours or something to that effect, not an actual read/unread post.

I believe the forum's read/unread system is driving me insane. >.< I come by to check and now I'm not sure if something has been commented on or now. I think this effects everyone amirite?

If you stay gone/idle long enough for the cookies to go stale (whatever they call it), or if you log out and log back in, then the crystal properly indicate what you have or have not checked. Since those solutions work well enough for the issue right now, I'd say that the impact is minor.

a problem to state is that when i come sometimes the unread is marked as read and also the ones i commented on are marked as unread...
