Volenteer Needs Page

RemnantWolf

I have tried to volunteer in the past and never got in. I am guessing that it is partually due to not knowing what is needed. I would like to work on this game but it would help me if I knew what was needed.

I think this would be a great tool to tell the community (and potential volunteers) what it is you are looking for. I know I would love that information.

That would be a good idea. Since I started accepting volunteer developers, I have been slowly creating a list of things I look for in potential volunteers from my experience:
  • Must be a US resident, and at least 18 years old (for legal reasons).
  • Volunteers should have a specific skill related to game development to offer. While I appreciate that several people have offered out of a basic desire to help... without a relevant skill or objective in mind, it tends not to go anywhere.
  • I prefer volunteers which have been registered with the site for at least a month, and who have participated on the forums. Several people have volunteered out of initial enthusiasm as soon as they find the project - but didn't fully understand the project, it's style, or it's story/lore.
  • Volunteers should be enthusiastic about Antilia specifically - preferably having read through much of the lore on the wiki and have asked questions. Volunteering is about working together to take the project forward - not an opportunity to replace the lore, redesign the game, or otherwise take the project backwards. Some things at this point are established and unchangeable.
  • I expect volunteers to behave professionally and communicate clearly.
  • Volunteers should be in a position where they have time they can commit to the project, and should be ready to do so regularly.
  • Volunteers must own a Windows PC capable of playing the game: 1ghz or faster processor, at least 1 gig of ram, and a video card supporting at least Shader Profile 1.0. Volunteers expected to use the editors (world builders, modelers, texture artists, and animators) will need a faster PC, with at least 3 gigs of ram, and support for Shader Profile 3.0. A broadband internet connection will be required to keep up with the frequent game/content updates in the development environment.
  • Volunteers are required to agree to the terms of the volunteer agreement with a digital signature before they can participate.
It may sound like a lot of rules - but it takes time for me to set up new accounts for volunteers, as well as helping them get set up with the software, etc. If a volunteer disappears immediately after that, then it is time wasted. Admittedly, sometimes this has been my own fault - for example, accepting a world designer before the tools are ready for serious world building. For that reason, I'm limiting volunteers to currently needed positions, as well as building an improved version of the volunteer site that will take a task-assignment approach rather than a request/submission approach.

Currently, I'm primarily interested in volunteers skilled in:
  • Concept Artists - Sketches of potential designs primarily in regards to architecture, clothing, character, and enemy/monster design
  • Illustrators - Particularly involving anthro characters and fantasy scenery. Ideally, work would be in color of a similar style to existing art.
  • Modeling - Spline based modeling using custom tool
  • Texture Painting - We use hand-painted textures, painted primarily using the mesh editor. We avoid using photographic textures.
  • Character Animation - Hand-keyframed using forward kinematics in custom animation tool
  • Sound Engineering
  • Graphic & Web Design (photoshop/html/css)
  • Web Community Builders/Leads (Gamemasters, Forum initiatives, etc.)
Those interested in Modeling, Texturing, or Animation should note that Antilia uses it's own in-house modeling tool, and that volunteering will require learning that tool. I cannot use materials created in external modeling packages such as Maya/3DMax/Blender/etc., as that would require me to own, maintain, and write exporters for all of those individual products.

I'll try to tidy all of this up, as well as add any additional information I can think of and put it on it's own page off the FAQ.

EDIT: Also I apologize RemnantWolf if you did not get a reply - I do try to reply to everyone who offers, but a few have indeed slipped through the cracks. One more note for those who volunteer via the contact form: be sure to provide an email address! It is optional on the form - but if you do not provide one, I have no way to reply!

Great to hear, I think that a page for that would help people better understand what you want. That's good for making specific people sign up or make people realize they are not good for the project.

Lucky for me there is something you want that I am good for (and with training, 2 things) so I will be sending you another note and try to sign up for helping out.

WOW long requirement list. this is going to take some time to analyze though i have some general idea. I don't meet the requirement saying as i am 14 years old and though i wish i could help i don't know if i can.

Also Jeff are there going to be members in Antilia because that's something I'm not anticipating.

Hey Jeff, I would love to volunteer, but I just have one small [or large, dunno] snag ... I'm not a US citizen, nor live in the US, I am British, so I was wondering if I could still apply to volunteer?

Also I know it looks like I'm new here [not been here a month yet] but I have been watching for quite a lot longer and only signed up today.

PS: It would also help me in return, on working on a big game, as I'm one of two founders of a Fur related game company based in the UK, Sirinthro Studios.

Did Jeff make these? Foxen would like one similar. Are they available anywhere?

Bah, I'm fifteen. I'd really hoped my general awesomesss could contribute (esp. in areas of language and other areas I have an interest in). Good thing I found this before anything else on volunteering for the project, otherwise I'd look like a fool.

Not to 'be' an NPC - to create one for it. Just so there's no misunderstanding.

Also, we don't actually have that volunteer program anymore, so I'll lock this one for now.

Here's a link to how we're handling it now.

Foxen, Jeffs program he uses is called toi. Ive tried on multiple occasions to volunteer and/or get a copy off of him. first attempt was a volunteer, to which he said i needed good grammer and spelling(gotten better). last attempt he said toi wasnt adapted for the kind of game i was trying to make, nor did he have the time. according to jeff, people that use toi, tend to adapt very quickly
